Harrah's to host poker tourney

The World Series of Poker qualifying tournament returns to Harrah's Atlantic City this week.

Each Wednesday through Sept. 29, Harrah's will hold weekly No-Limit Texas Hold 'Em tournaments for players who hope to compete in the most prestigious event in poker, which will take place next year in Las Vegas.

The qualifying rounds begin each week at 6 p.m. They will offer weekly cash prizes.

The top three finalists will receive a $10,000 entry into the World Series of Poker. Each finalist also will receive round-trip airfare for two to Las Vegas, as well as hotel accommodations at Harrah's Las Vegas or The Rio.

Players can buy into a qualifying tournament for $150 at Harrah's Main Cage on the casino floor. Entry is cash only. Registration is 4 to 6 p.m. on the concourse.

The weekly contest, which will be held in the Poker Room, will consist of 10 tables with a maximum of 90 players.

Pageant tickets

Discount tickets for groups of 10 or more are available for the 2004 Miss America preliminary competitions, which will be held Sept. 13-15, and the finals, which will be Sept. 18. All competitions are at Boardwalk Hall.

The preliminaries begin at 7:30 p.m. The finals pre-show starts at 8 p.m., with a live national telecast starting at 9 p.m.

Tickets cost $15 each for the preliminaries, a discount of $10 off the regular price, and $45 for the finals, a discount of $5 off regular price.

Bike sweepstakes

Anyone who visits Trump Taj Mahal on July 17 could ride away on a new Schwinn bicycle.

The casino will give away 500 of them in the Tour De Trump Schwinn 500 Bike Sweepstakes.

The casino will give away 50 bikes per hour from noon to 10 p.m. Winners can select from children's or adult models.

No play is necessary. Entrants simply must receive a slot and/or table rating or visit the Taj Card Services center between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.

The Taj Mahal also will give away a 42-inch JVC plasma TV every half-hour between noon and 8 p.m. on Aug. 1. Drawings will be in the main concourse.

Slots giveaway

Slot players at Bally's Atlantic City will have chances to win cash prizes through Sept. 12 with the Garfield Slots Instant Win and Cash Giveaway. The promotion celebrates the arrival of the Garfield Slots, which are available exclusively at Bally's Atlantic City and the Claridge Casino at Bally's.

Garfield slots are available in pennies, 2 cents and nickels.

Bally's Connection Card holders earn entries by playing slots and table games at Bally's Atlantic City, The Wild Wild West Casino, Coyote Kate's Slot Parlor and/or the Claridge Casino at Bally's.

Players can claim their entries at any Connection Center throughout the casino floor, the bus information center, or Magnums. They can deposit them into the designated drum on the sixth floor on the advertised drawing dates.

Drawings are held in the main ballroom on the sixth floor.

Connection Card holders may track their number of entries by inserting their Connection Card into a slot machine card reader, pushing the number 5 and then pushing "enter" on the keypad.

The first date for prize drawings is Sept. 10. Drawings for cash prizes valued from $250 to $5,000 will be held at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Winners have until 6:30 p.m. to claim their prize. Participants can win up to three prizes in each of these drawings.

There will be a grand prize drawing at 7 p.m., at which time 15 patrons will have a chance to win prizes ranging from $500 to $15,000. Grand prize winners must claim their prize within five minutes of the drawing.

Participants may only win once at the grand prize drawing.

The second date for prize drawings is Sept. 12. Drawings for cash prizes valued from $250 to $5,000 will be held at 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Winners have until 7:30 p.m. to claim their prize.

There will be a grand prize drawing at 8 p.m., at which time 15 patrons will have a chance to win prizes ranging from $500 to $10,000.
