Pokie tax 'seduction'
2004/8/17 9:30:00

WEST Australian Premier Geoff Gallop has attacked his state counterparts for being "seduced" by the tax windfall from poker machines.

Dr Gallop, whose state is the only Australian jurisdiction that disallows poker machines in hotels and clubs, was speaking after The Australian revealed that states had reaped a $30 billion tax windfall from poker machines in the past decade.

The figure is more than a third of the $70 billion gambled on the machines since they were introduced in Victoria, South Australia and Queensland from 1992.

"The windfall (from pokies) is simply not worth the woe that comes with it," Dr Gallop said.

"Governments around the country (have been) seduced by the promise of huge profits and succumbed to pokies, but they are now seeing the untold devastation they wreak."
