Anglicare challenges Tas Govt to live up to gambling claims
2004/2/17 21:06:00

Welfare provider Anglicare wants the Tasmanian Government to live up to its claims that it is leading the country in poker machine regulation and patron care.

The organisation has released a set of recommendations for changes to Tasmania's largely self-regulating policies, highlighting key areas where the state is lagging behind the rest of the country.

Recommendations include slowing the speed of machines and banning gambling advertisments outside of venues.

Anglicare chief executive Chris Jones says the Government should put its money where its mouth is.

"One of the things that we've been hearing from the State Government is that we're at best practice when it comes to problem gambling," Mr Jones said.

"Best practice means that you are leading the way, that you're out there in front.

"That's not true. They've already said that's what they want to do, they've already said they want to be leading the way in protecting Tasmanians, so that's why we should do it."
