WEEKS of battle came to an end last week, as Sedgemoor's top poker players battled it out for glory in the finals of a new free poker league - with a Bridgwater player acing his rivals to take the trophy.

The River Rat poker league was set up two months ago by enthusiast Rob Plaistow, offering fans of the game the chance to play for free in pubs around Sedgemoor and battle it out for big money prizes.

Pubs in Bridgwater, Burnham, Berrow and East Huntspill host games on different nights of the week, with winners accruing points towards a big final.

That final took place last week - and Bridgwater's Simon Keith saw off rival Pete Hawkes to bag £350 of high street vouchers.

Organiser Rob said: "The day went really well, with over 65 players attending, and a Bridgwater player winning the main event.

"Simon came out on top to win the grand prize in a close fought contest with Pete. There was plenty of action until Simon raised all in and hit his pair of tens on the flop, leaving Pete empty handed and Simon victorious."
