Vernique Montoya, daughter of former Surprise City Councilman Johnny Montoya, was diagnosed at 12 with a rare kidney disease. In January, she was diagnosed with end stage renal failure and has since been on dialysis.
Her father is donating a kidney to save his daughter's life. Though insurance will cover most of the cost of the procedure, the family is facing high medication costs.
Councilman Doc Sullivan is organizing a 64-player Texas Hold 'Em tournament to be held at The Cigar Box and The Scoreboard Restaurant, each site hosting 32 players. Four finalists from each will compete at the Scoreboard for the championship trophy.
