More students are turning to poker as a form of cheap entertainment.
Risk it all or play for fun.
Poker is perhaps the oldest card game in America, but it’s also the most popular.
For some students, the game serves as an appealing social activity.
“[In poker], you’re always talking about stuff when you’re playing,” said Shane Clanton, advertising sophomore. “You can kind of relate it to girls going to get a manicure. It’s mostly a social thing.”

For others, it’s a form of cheap entertainment.
“It’s fun, and it gives you something you do,” said Andrew James, University College freshman. “If you come and buy in with $5, and you get two to three hours of game playing, even if you lose, it’s three hours of fun for just $5.”
Whether it’s an online tournament or a round of celebrity poker, the oldest card game has also become the newest fad in entertainment.
“It’s just become a craze in American pop culture,” he said.
John Hall, business sophomore, and his friends use poker as an escape from school. They have played poker every Wednesday for the past nine months.
“I think it’s more of a social thing where everybody just hangs out and has a good time,” Hall said.
Hall learned to play from his grandfather when he was 3 years old.
James said for some students, gambling can be dangerous.
“There should definitely be an age limit on gambling,” he said. “So many people get into credit card problems and into debt like that. I think gambling can be a whole lot more dangerous than having a credit card.”
