About $24,000 worth of poker machines confiscated by law enforcement officers were destroyed Tuesday.

The 20 machines were confiscated during several 2003 raids of Hart County homes where they were being operated illegally. Nearly $20,000 in cash was seized from them.

A large steel “foot” attached to an Earth moving machine was used to pulverize the gambling devices. State law requires that the machines be destroyed.

“This is the easiest way we know how to do it,” Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland said.

Bob Lavender, Hart County’s district attorney, said several people who live out of state have wanted to buy the machines, but state law prohibits that, he said.

Poker machines were outlawed in Georgia in 2001 by the legislature under then-Gov. Roy Barnes because many people were receiving cash payouts instead of merchandise prizes.
